Exposition:
A connection to tradition and a desire for modernity are two elements of Shi Jianmin’s works.
In Chinese calligraphy, what is called “cursive” writing is able to modify a word to the point of weakening its original meaning so that it may take on the tone and feel of the ink itself, an emotion beyond beauty─ Shi Jianmin’s work “sky” has the versatility of calligraphic cursive. Each in its own way, the energy of the wind driving at the clouds, persistent concentrations of emotion and feeling of divine ease. His work in “hard” materials is the incarnation of a standard and a cultural unison within which technique and sentiments about beauty are joined as one. Stainless steel took on every form, from the fantastic to the bizarre: floating clouds, flowing water… resembling both a song and a confession, they stir up complex emotions within the viewer. Shi Jianmin gives shape to what humanity ultimately seeks out, a deeper form of introspection, while simultaneously rendering his cultural predilections on art and design.
