In the beginning, Cheng Tsai-tung’s painting style was expressionism. The landscape of Taipei and its suburbs was an important object of painting for him. Each painting frequently recorded and narrated his trips with family or friends. He takes the landscape of Taipei as the topic of the artistic creation repeatedly because, on one hand it is an extension of Chinese landscape painting, and on the other hand, he insists upon catching the poetic meaning as well as the logic delight by means of the oil painting techniques, which is one of his important characteristics. The stereotype about drawing techniques overemphasized by traditional Chinese ink painting can thus be logically and cleverly avoided. This strategy enables him to enter or exit freely and to absorb the charm of each traditional master but not to be involved too deeply in order to maintain his modern ego.
