Quan Shanshi (全山石) is a great oil painter and fine arts educator of contemporary China.  In 1954, Quan entered Lenin Art School at Lieninggele of Soviet Union and majored in oil painting as a disciple of professors including Melnikov and other great Russian artists.  Six years later, he returned to his alma mater, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, and has taught there since then.  His positions include the Dean of the Department of Oil Painting, adjunct professor, professor, and the Dean of Studies of the college; he is also in charge of the 3rd Studio of the Department of Oil Painting, which has nurtured many undergraduates, graduate students and young teachers.  From the late 70s to the 80s, Quan had visited Xinjiang eight times.  While he was teaching there, he also experienced the lifestyle and created large amounts of works that portray the local landscapes and the minority groups in Xinjiang.  In his work “Stable”, the lean horses reflect the lifestyle and conditions in Xinjiang.  The colorful and vivid presentation is romantic and rich in national consciousness and artistic features; it’s an expressive painting.
