ZHONG CHENG

馬六明 MA LIUMING (b.1969)

Born in Hubei, China, Ma Liu-Ming graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Hubei Academy of Fine Arts in 1991. He is considered a conceptual performance artist, and is particularly renowned for a series of project titled “The Suicide Plan” created in 1988. Ma and other artists founded the Beijing East Village art group in 1993. In the same year, he took on his second series of work titled “Fen- Ma Liu Ming.” His work “Untitled II” was selected for the 7th International Istanbul Biennale in 2001. Other exhibitions include: “Any Day” Performance Art Piece (2003, Japan, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum); “Ma Liu-Ming Exhibition” (2004, Beijing, China); “Ma Liu-Ming in Seoul” (2006, Seoul, Korea); “A Brief Introduction of Ma Liu-Ming Solo Exhibition” (2007, Spain, Galeria Dolores de Sierra); “Ma Liu-Ming’s New Work Exhibition” (2009, Spain, Madrid); “Ma Liu Ming: A Tenth of a Second” Solo Exhibition (2014, Shanghai, China). He is also a participant of many group performance such as “Translated Acts” (2002, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico); “Peripheries Become the Center” (2003, Prague Biennale) and “Chinese Style” (2011, Today Art Museum, Beijing).
