ZHONG CHENG

余承堯 YU CHENGYAO (1898-1993)

Yu Cheng-Yao was born in Fujian, China. He studied economics at the Waseda University, Japan in 1920. He later turned to study at the Imperial Japanese Army Academy. When returning to China, he was hired by the R.O.C. Military Academy in 1923. He retired from the position of lieutenant general in 1946. He started to paint at the age of 56 years old, without training or instructors, he created a new perspective on traditional Ink paintings, and became the legend of the art circle. His artworks were first shown in 1966 to the public, and the works have been on tour in the states for four years. In 1985, he was invited to participate in the group exhibition “New Wave of Chinese traditional painting”, he received recognition in America and France after the show. In 1986, he had his first solo exhibition at the Lion Gallery in Taipei. In 1990, his work “The Mountain-Like Swords” was acquired by National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. In 1988, he the National Museum of History held “The 90s Retrospective Exhibition of Yu Cheng-Yao” and printed publication for the collection. In 1889, he became an honorary member of China Educational and Cultural Exchange Association. In 2013, Asia Museum of Modern Art held “Yu Cheng-Yao Solo Exhibition” and in 2015, the National Museum of History held “Calligraphy and Paintings by Yu Cheng-Yao
