Speaking in terms of the development process of Taiwanese contemporary water ink painting, Yu Cheng Yao differs from various art schools and traditional literati painters and has become an indispensable prominent figure in contemporary art world. His colossal and complex painting styles have sparked unparalleled inspiration to the sophisticated water painting world.

The composition of Yu Cheng Yao’s artworks is complex and full of layers. At the same time, he has created a majestic feel by overcoming the traditional problems from composition and layering in order to create an imagery artistic concept which has been presented in the form of calligraphy skills and lines. The artist’s creativity is evident in his calligraphy presentation.

The disorderly strokes, as the artist said, are ways of presenting forms. If you look closely, it seems disordered; however, if you view from a distance, there is order. Yu Cheng Yao does not rigidly stick to the purity of ink and brush and said “there is life to the mountain, and it brings about changes. You need to have disordered brushstrokes to accurately describe the mountains or else the painting will be untrue to nature.”
