Exposition:

“Variation of a Tree’s Branches” is the earliest stone series work after he returned from Germany. He indulged himself in to two kinds of series-Stone and Tree’s Branches series. Zhou’s Tree’s Branches series looked to continue this tradition with expressive brushes seemingly influenced by Chinese calligraphy. In this work, Zhou renders the branches with a thick and cursive application of paint, reminiscent of the variation of brush strokes in Chinese calligraphy. In the mean time, the use of bright colors in this painting also creates a tremendous sense of activity, in a style that is unprecedented in either Chinese or western painting. In this work “Variation of a Tree’s Branches”the bold brush strokes broke the shackles of strength on the artists’ intention of expressing his emotions. The subjective colors themselves become an ode to freedom in life and artistic expression in imagism. The highlight of this work is how it expresses freedom and nonchalance without losing its rigor. It is also bold and frank without losing the perceptiveness of art. He drew upon the refinement and mysticism in traditional Chinese painting then imposed them with modern expressionism’s tension-filled brush strokes, textures and powerful colors.
