Xue Song is an unusual artist. All of his works are born out of flames. Taking original copies of beautifully colored paper and various type of paper materials and printed matter Xue Song transforms them through burning into bits of irregularly shaped fragments. He specifically chooses the content on these printed materials and painstakingly and carefully arranges the fragments in a set composition and image. The intrinsic relationship between the composition and writing and image is fascinating, though rarely do people pay attention to the profundity of these details. Just as an oil painter uses brush strokes to build up an image, he pastes fragments of printed matter on a canvas. This is in fact Xue Song’s “brushwork.” For many years Xue Song has had a constant interest in the precarious issues of politics, historical images, cultural tradition and popular fads, and has vigorously developed a strong individual opinion. |
