Zhao Nengzhi graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, lived and worked in Chengdu as a professional artist and a member of Expressionist art early on. After 1993, he was inspired from the “cynical realism”, but found that the artist’s expressionistic attitude and psychological state of depression is difficult to combine with another gesture of ridicule, until he decided to just use facial expressions to express the theme he was concerned: Injured heart. His “face” series is a comprehensive pathological analysis, “dull, intoxication, worries, injuries,” Zhao Nengzhi deliberately experimented with brush strokes and ways over the years to depict a close-up of the head, found the specific ways to perform the content of these spirit.

In the late 1990’s, Zhao’s discovered style of expression not only concentrated all the expression in the human face but also showed the inner self. He would begin by making the image of the face like a stranger, swollen and as if it has been soaked in water for a very long time. Just like the soul of humanity and other spirits suffering greatly, he thus obtained a deep pain in the watchful and entranced eyes as if they were looking at others and also looking at his own reflection in the mirror.
