Zhou Chun Ya has his own perspective on the relationship between the contemporary and history. He thinks that tradition is only valuable when it is in process. Traditions exist because of people’s recognition of the past, collective memory and recognition. Therefore, during the process of creating, even though thoughts are built on accumulation of the past; it is still today’s innovation and a modern product through memory.

“I have a more unrestrained and liberated perspective and interest in Chinese paintings, especially scholar’s paintings. Instead of dominating the past, I would rather explore a new path that fits my goal.”

──Zhou Chun Ya

Chinese Spirit” utilized the features of impressionist landscapes and implementing it with expressionism. Through the texture and structures of mountain rocks, the artist discovered inner spirits of life. The entire picture is expressed with the low- chrome colors, it is conservative and elegant. The strength and gentleness, density and scarcity, thick and thin, Yin and Yang, dry and wet techniques in Chinese calligraphy created a new style in materials and themes. According to Chinese art critic Lu Peng, Zhou Chun Ya’s tradition must be given a new understanding and interpretation through new tools and ideas. He used his own “new painting” to inspire Chinese literati painting.
