During 1990s when the Chinese art world became dramatize and idealize politics and reality, Zhou Chun Ya did not follow suit in the trend of “political pop”. However, he begain his exploration of personal creation with his mountain rock series.

Mountain rocks have long been an important material for ancient literatis. They symbolize nature, at the same time, also a medium for scholars to express their affections which represent much complex feelings and tradition.

“Landscape Series” is presented with simple and concise forms. The main object is layered with oil paintings, to increase the richness of colors and texture, making the object more sophisticated and stable. However, the brushstrokes are full of rhythm. Zhou Chun Ya’s goal is no longer presenting nature, instead he wants to express his emotions with forms, and with the changes in forms he can directly show people’s feelings for nature. His innovative theme is restricted by landscape images. However, his innovation in pursuit of art has created a brand new space with neo expressionist painting.
