Zhou Chun Ya replaced the traditional rock painting’s elegant and light brushstrokes with intricate visual elements and materials. The colors layer on top of each other to create a rich texture and combined with limited colors. He handled some partials with blocks of white hues, to create a strong yet rhythmic visual effect for the viewers.
《Women Body》was created in 1992, when rocks series creation was at its peak; It was also an important piece of art after Zhou Chun Ya returned from Germany. Zhou Chun Ya discovered human images in the texture and lines of rocks as some rock textures resemble human muscles, and he tried combining Chinese rocks in forms of human figures. This new idea won him an academic award in the “First Guangzhou 90th Art Biennial”; the board of judges greatly recognized his creation as an “exquisite and unique” masterpiece.
Ancient literati composed poems and paintings to show the appreciation for the figure of rocks: important objects in Chinese traditional painting which symbolize nature and also a metaphor for literati spirits. Zhou Chun Ya detaches himself from the restraints of landscape painting, and interpreted the traditional with New Expressionism painting techniques.
