“Flowers” had brushstrokes that were bold and direct, showing the moment of life and movements just as those movements of the strong branches. The strong traces and handling of the texture of materials enriched the painting. The blank margins, the dense lines, the line versus surface, the contrast of red and green give life to the painting, making it lively and full of energy. 
Zhou Chun Ya’s beloved dog “black roots” passed away due to illness in 1999, and since then, dog related themes never appeared. “Flowers” was created in 1999, an emotionally difficult year for Zhou as he was trying to look for different ideas. The brushstrokes of traditional Chinese paintings are apparent, yet Zhou took a different approach: abstractionism; this retained the golden mean and reservation of Chinese traditional culture; meanwhile, manifesting the focus on colors in Western paintings. The painting reflects the sincerity and intricate inner thoughts.
