Exposition:

“It is not the physical distance or one’s age that gives way to nostalgia, but the emotional distance and the duration of traceable memories.”
- Yeh Zhu-Chi

Growing up in Yuli, Hualien, the backwater of Taiwan, Yeh Zhu-Chi acquired a unique sense of value and outlook on life. The magnificent landscape of Hualien has made an imprint on him. Carrying his love for the homescape, he embarked on the journey of art as he started graduate study in Brooklyn College of the City University in New York City. Nurtured by both Eastern and Western art, Yeh’s landscape exhibits tremendous and yet ambiguous tension with the constantly alternating sense and sensibility. He once commented, “To me, still life is landscape indoor, while landscape is still life outdoor.” Anything in life could be a source of inspiration to him, be it the mountain, the ocean, the cloud or the tree. It could be the watermelons grown in Yuli or the flowers of life, which have all evolved into nostalgic symbols for his parents and home.

Unlike other artists of his time, Yeh didn’t pursue abstract or neo-expressionism, but the classical Venetian painting techniques. The use of Tempera upon the foundation of oil painting gives his paintings supple tenderness, which sets off the glowing nature without any use of white. Such classical nuance is combined with realistic and melancholic portrayal, implicit and mystic, distinguishing Yeh as a unique artist in the contemporary art circle. Taimali – Taitung is a depiction of the coastal view along Taimali. Yeh creates dynamic visuals with delicate brushwork, and rich layers with expressive composition. A brief encounter between the artist and the still life is transformed, morphing into heartfelt moments captured on the canvas and revealing a sense of lonesome nostalgia and a sense of mystique that is metaphysical. With utmost sensitivity and humility, Yeh imbued his own life within the majestic landscape, between light and shadow, between space and time, conveying the dialogue between him and nature as well as his observation of the spiritual realm to reflect his melancholy and pursuit for the beauty of his homescape.
