“Your canvas will never be big enough to fit the entire world, thus you must make your canvas an extension of your world” --- Liao Chi Chun

Liao Chi Chun was a pioneer of Taiwanese art movements and contributor to the development of contemporary painting in Taiwan. He attended Tokyo School of Fine Arts during his teens and was strongly influenced by the developments of Western contemporary art. When he returned, he was eager to share his knowledge and expand the horizon of aesthetics in his country. Liao Chi Chun was an active member of the art community, he received the Zhongshan Literary Art Creation Award, and the Golden Belt Award for Chinese Painting. He also participated in multiple art competitions as a jury member. After World War II, he took the post of professor in the Fine Arts Department at National Normal University. He cultivated numerous outstanding students, it was his passion and encouragements that led his students to form the Fifth Moon Group that is now an internationally renowned art group. Liao Chi-Chun was a role model and inspiration to many generations of artists. His artworks consist of landscapes and still life subject, known for his signature use of bold colors and romantic nature. His strong ability in painting have earned him various honorable titles including the “Color Enchanter.”

Liao Chi-Chun was completely indulged in Western aesthetic, as an artist himself he experimented with multiple techniques and creative approach including the Impressionist style, Fauvism, Abstract and Abstract Expressionism before establishing his unique artistic language. Ms. Wang Su Feng has studied Liao Chi-Chun’s art for various years, she strongly believes that Liao is a multi-thinker; because he is opened to both traditional and contemporary philosophies, what he takes away will not become his burden or restrictions. Liao was dedicated to revealing the beauty of art to the world through his acute eye and sincere emotions. His art was also his form of communication, at times it is bold and passionate, other times it is gentle, yet it always embodies a meaningful fascination and contemporary essence.

In “Taipei Xiaonanman” the half figurative style, and multilayers of colors portray the dazzling and prosperous urban landscape beneath the sun. The painting expertly renders the composition with multi-thickness of lines and interchanging colors. The tall structure of Xiaonanman quickly comes alive under the artist’s brush. He perfectly captures the Impressionist’s technique of depicting lights, and colors in reaction to the light. The painting represents a balance and complete assemble of composition, space and light.

Liao Chi-Chun’s art is similar to a whimsical and make-believed world, although the artist lived during the difficulties years of war time his art always conveyed only happiness and hope. Even at the end of his life, he still created bright and wonderful paintings. Liao Chi-Chun once said, “I do not know how to speak, I speak through my paintings, and it is through painting that I can best express my emotions.” Liao Chi-Chun remains one of the most influential artist of Taiwan
