"Jia Youfu once remarked that his clouds differ greatly from real ones; they are distilled and refined. By comparing the clouds in his early works with those in recent years, one can discern the increasing degree of refinement and mastery. He has infused clouds with spirituality, vitality, and artistic essence." --- Foreword to Jia Youfu's New Painting Collection (1990), by the Artist/Publisher

Jia Youfu, born in 1942 in Suning County, Hebei Province, is a celebrated Chinese landscape painter. Graduating from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1965 under the instructions of Mr. Li Keran, Jia has dedicated decades to the art of landscape painting. Immersing himself in the Taihang Mountains, he has gleaned profound insights into the interconnectedness of nature and life. Over time, his artistic vision has evolved into a style suffused with enigmatic depth, while he has also pioneered a teaching methodology for landscape painting that resonates with contemporary sensibilities.

Jia's oeuvre of landscape paintings can broadly be delineated into three phases. Initially, from the 1970s to the early 1980s, he was entranced by the pastoral allure of the Taihang Mountains, embodying a pursuit of idyllic poetry in his artistic expression. In the subsequent phase, from the early 1980s to the mid-1980s, his profound exploration of the Taihang Mountains and its inhabitants led to an appreciation of their distinctive character, reflected in his art through a quest for majestic and masculine beauty. Finally, from the mid-1980s to the present, he adopted a panoramic viewpoint, capturing the expansiveness and grandeur of the Taihang Mountains while aspiring to a loftier aesthetic ideal transcending geographical confines through Eastern aesthetics and philosophy.

Jia frequently employs clouds as a central motif in his works, crafting diverse moods and atmospheres. His innovative approach imbues clouds with spirituality and philosophical contemplation, resulting in a distinctive and captivating ink painting style. Through bold brushwork, he vividly delineates the undulating terrain and ethereal clouds of the Taihang Mountains, endowing his compositions with rhythm and intricate detail. One can almost palpate the serene mountain ambience and the enduring splendor of nature, as well as perceive his profound affection and reverence for the natural world, in Jia's heartfelt interpretation.

In "Sunset's Glow After the Rain: A Mountain's Joy (Clouds Dance in Taihang)," the peaks are enveloped in swirling clouds, evoking a sense of mystical tranquility after the rainfall. Traces of mountain paths and the resplendent scenery unveil the pulsating vitality of life and the exuberance of nature. Drawing upon personal experiences, Jia adeptly captures the essence of the Taihang Mountains in ink, perpetually exploring and refining his artistic expression to present scenes that inspire wonder and admiration.
