As a pivotal figure in the post-war era of Taiwanese art history, Yang Chihung emerges as an exceptional and irreplaceable presence. His journey into the world of art was sparked by the inspiring biography of Vincent van Gogh. In the early 1980s, Yang Chihung made a significant move to New York, immersing himself in a rich tapestry of diverse cultures and artistic influences. This transformative experience ignited the birth of a new artistic language, characterized by elements of Neo-Expressionism, Romanticism, and Symbolism, which captivated the Western art scene of the time. He rapidly garnered international recognition, establishing himself as a focal point in the global art community.

What sets Yang Chihung apart is his unwavering commitment to humanistic ideals, infusing his artworks with profound literary qualities and depth. He became the trailblazing Chinese artist to successfully navigate and integrate into the gallery system, earning his well-deserved reputation as one of the foremost contemporary Chinese Abstract Expressionist artists.

Throughout his illustrious career, Yang Chihung underwent a fascinating evolution of style. His artistic lexicon mirrored his evolving life experiences, progressing from "representation" to "sensation," and then further evolving from "sensation" to "impression." Having journeyed through his formative years exploring self-discovery, immersing himself in the vibrant New York art scene of the 1980s, and delving into the realms of botanical aesthetics and philosophical contemplation during the 1990s, he welcomed the new millennium with a vibrant celebration of light and life.

His daring use of color and dynamic brushwork masterfully captured the poetic essence of existence and conveyed his deep reverence for the profound connection between art and nature. Yang Chihung's art exudes an Eastern poetic sensibility, gracefully blending tenderness with resilience, ultimately encapsulating the artistic philosophy of "capturing the essence without being confined by the form" and "finding joy in the process rather than fixating on the outcome."

In 2003, he ventured into the realm of Eastern ink painting, skillfully employing ink and watercolor. His work was met with acclaim at the "World Calligraphy Biennial Exhibition" in Korea. Starting in 2007, Yang Chihung seamlessly merged his lifelong artistic experiences, spanning impressionism, surrealism, abstract expressionism, and photography, into his ink painting. With the vigor of wild cursive script, he eloquently transcribed the profound interplay between humanity, life, and nature onto the canvas.

In the following painting, September 2007, a magnificent and expansive landscape unfurls, with a touch of orange gracing the vast sky. Upon closer examination, the intricate interplay of texture, color pigments, and brushstrokes reveals subtle rhythms. It appears to capture the essence of time, a moment when the brush lingered, while the flowing ambiance continues to extend beyond the canvas. This conveys the perpetual energy and selfless emotions emanating from the natural world. Yang Chihung adeptly incorporates the splattering and dripping techniques reminiscent of classic ink painting, transforming tangible natural scenes into abstract concepts within his creations.

With a focus on expressing inner emotions and profound depth, his abstract paintings consistently exude a sense of spatial awareness and humanistic qualities. Each encounter with Yang Chihung's artwork promises a fresh perspective, diverse interpretations, and a rich tapestry of imagination.
