As the first generation of Chinese 20th Century artists, Pang Jiun further translated modern essence into contemporary context.

His artworks consist of vivid brushstrokes and minimalism; while also preserving the techniques and rhythm of traditional ink drawings, creating what he calls a “structural balance.”

Through continuous exploration and new breakthrough, Pang Jiun successfully merged the “scholarly essence” portrayed in traditional Chinese ink-drawings into his oil paintings, his creations are strong and meaningful, offering a new and innovative perspective to painting.

“If Pang Jiun’s still life paintings were marvelous and vibrant, then his landscape paintings are elegant and subtle.

When comparing the two, they demonstrate completely different demeanor of colors and style, one would be surprised that they were painted by the same artist…. His landscape paintings are often serene, and almost solitary.” Passage taken from “Experiment, Think, and Create —  Pang Shiun's Artistic Path” by Shui Tien-Zhong.

Snow Mountain has been refined by the artist's extensive gray tones with emphasis on brushstrokes and texture in the depiction of the distant mountains and clouds.

The artist combined the unique natural aesthetics from Chinese painting with Western color and light theory.

The main mountain is depicted in a deep and intense gray, reflecting upon the mountain surface are white and light gray hues from the sky, creating a dazzling contrast between the adjacent cold and warm color blocks. The entity of the painting portrays a humble and poetic demeanor, enabling the viewers to imagine endlessly.

Not only did Pang Jiun reconstructed the scenery, he also created depth and distance within the two dimensional work.

The execution of the interconnected and intricate structure is harmonized by complimentary colors; the result apprehends the perfect resonance of shape and color, and spoke in a modern vocabulary that embodies the essence of tradition Chinese landscape paintings and characteristics of Western Modern Expressionism.
