Zhao Nengzhi is used to such a depiction in his paintings：tripping of  the skin from the bodies, with the pinkish, raw flesh exposed. The richest expression for the artist is not the outfit or skin, but the pure naked and bare condition inside, which I would like to call “obsession—an obsession with the shadow in mind.

Looking at Zhao Nengzhi’s paintings, the portraits are not very realistic or detailed, but usually they interact with viewers. The expressions in their eyes are all charmed or lost in a peaceful surface. Heading up, slightly opening the eyes, calmly gazing…Zhao Nengzhi is a master in depicting from different angles. Seems like whether you accept or not, those sticky, exposed flesh is thrown onto your face. The unprepared shock is exactly what we get in David Lynch’s movies.

Zhao Nengzhi is a devoted believer in the theory that his art should be visual instead of mental, to represent instead of describing. Social subjects become a clich once they’re discussed on the table. But Zhao Nengzhi has found his own way to explore the reflection on the inside, which is like to push the tension to the dege of the door, any time, the pressure of the portraits will crush your heart. Actually, behind the extreme obsession with the shadow in mind, we understand he is examining the mundane existence in social circumstances.
