Chen Tso-tao was born in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, a flight officer in the past and now a well-known potter. In the past decade, under persevering study he published a number of ancient glaze and innovative kiln glaze that caused a strong shock and praise in the pottery industry, in which experts and scholars found the “Drunken Beauty” to be the most breathtaking. It is also known as the “peach blossom red glaze” that China lost, and extremely difficult kiln glaze coexisted with copper red (to burn out in the kiln without oxygen) and Verdigris (to burn out in the kiln with more oxygen), and the Golden Sands Drunken Beauty such valuable technological breakthroughs in glaze, Taiwan Museum of History commented as “kiln glaze second to none, glorious blossoming in pottery industry, his works is the glory of our kingdom of ceramic and will be the representative in this era,  ... this glaze coloring is unprecedented and peerless masterpiece...”The Chinese pottery master Mr. Qin Xilin, Dean of Jingdezhen Ceramics Academy praise Chen a miracle of the ceramic sector and affirmed his achievements in contribution to ceramic industries. 

Chen Tso-tao’s work is mostly based on pottery throwing with some changes added. Therefore, the shape is simple with tension. This is the main features of his works. On the aspect of themes of his works, he likes to depict landscapes, trees, sky and other natural scenes, and perform two- dimensional painting effect by surrounding of the works forming a picture without end on both sides. Along with different positions of the viewer, it shows a continuity of the composition of the screen and further shows the momentum of its magnificent landscape.

 

Celadon with Blue Décor

Published in 1991, the “new blue and white” glaze, integrated with Ming Dynasty blue and white porcelain production method, painted decoration on the ceramic green body, use the performance of bright blue enamel landscape theme, in order to multi-layered glazing techniques to represent mountains and thick trees change shades of color of the glaze to make his works showing a natural scene, structured, refreshing eye-catching. Chen to shape the modern concepts, combines the unique glazing and firing techniques, the traditional glaze to be a new interpretation.
