Enlightened at 17 from observing carvings of Buddha, Hsiao Yi is an artist of folk culture and life. During his apprenticeship, he had the chance to learn the relationship between Taiwanese folk culture and the art of carving. In fact, Hsiao Yi’s works show the view of life and changes from a Taiwanese perspective. On one hand, he immerses himself in the narrative character of the art of Taiwan’s Buddhist carvings; on the other hand, from life experience and training, he thinks and disputes over the confrontation, contradiction and reunification of the human nature and Buddha nature in the ontology. Using his inner self to guide him, he rebuilds the reality of the human body, life, and passion, and presumes without guise the various transformation possibilities from the different schools at home and abroad. The work of “Guan Gong” is indeed bold and innovative. The Buddha’s shape illustrates the feelings of life and further raises the opinion that the Buddha-nature and humanity are hard to distinguish. In deviating from the traditional shape of the wooden statues, Hsiao Yi said: “To go beyond the stereotyped Buddha to the Buddha within; what I have carved is not only me, but also a Buddha with a human character.”
