The “Reincarnation-Tiger” series drew inspiration from the twelve Chinese zodiac signs and made structural changes to the human body. The twelve women had heads of animals, short and fat legs, stout built, and breasts with erect nipples. The chubby children in their arms are like the angels in religious art from Italy. Since the 12-painting series are all created in the same style, the women holding babies all take on the same look in spite of the color variation of the background and figures.

Shi Lei is a skilled painter, but this series was created using simple techniques. He applied “fade-out” technique and enhanced the painting by other techniques.

Traditionally, the twelve zodiac signs were used to categorize individuals born in different months. The Chinese believe that one born in the year of the tiger differs in demeanor from that of the ox, but their mothers love them just the same.

As the city is the highlight of socialization, a typical city is made up of densely arrayed housing. The structural make up of a city is a record of the social makeup that changes as times goes by. Therefore, “The demolition and construction of houses” is selected as the theme in this series to express inclination toward urbanization as a result of one’s way of life and struggle for survival. City dwellers on the other hand tend to encounter more social and cultural related problems.
