Wu Zuoren’s early oil paintings are under the influence of Vlaminck from the Netherlands. He began painting using vivid colors after he had returned from Belgium and such transformation is inseparable from his involvement in watercolor and water ink color. His later works such as “Fishing Village” focuses on“ qi-cheng-zhuan-he (a traditional style in Chinese writing comprised of 4 stages: “beginning”, “development”, “turn”, and “end)” under the influence of the Chinese water ink painting techniques. The blending of the strokes gives his work a perfect look. After receiving intensive training from European schools, he added the artistic conception and technique of Chinese painting and mastered both.
