Born to a prominent family in Taiwan’s Chiayi area in 1914, Yoshio Chang, was inspired to become an artist at the tender age of eleven when he saw chen chengpo, one of the doyens of Westerm-Style painting in Taiwan, sketching from life at Chiayi city’s Central Fountain’. Under Chen’s guidance and instruction, Chang’s natural talents soon began to bloom. Still a teenager, he went to Japan to attend middle school there, and at the age of 18 he entered the Japan Imperial Art Academy. Later he studied the Kawabatat Painting School, now having decided to devote his entire life to painting, no matter how difficult it would be. Indeed, Change spent much of his career in destitute circumstances. He was the first painter in the history of Taiwanese art to go to Japan and Paris to hone his skills and broaden his horizons. Due to his living in difficult and spirits restrained environment, he expressed it in the melancholy and submerged black color with hard, straight black lines on the edge of object with strong brushes, colors and textures. The is the renowned “Black Line Period”.
