Hong Lei is one of the important concept photographers in China. The theme of life, time and space has always been the focus in his creation in the 90s. His creative media have also transformed from painting into image photography. Having experienced the turmoil and parting with loved ones in China, Hong undertook how life vanished in the split of second and attempted to transform such short-lived moments into eternity. Hong repeatedly contemplated and debated on the value of life and extended it to anxiety for the entire culture and history. In the early 1990s, Hong’s “Landscape in the end of century I-II-III” is one of his earlier oil paints that reflect his attitude toward the time and space he was in.
