Yue Min Jun is one of the Chinese art world idols F4- Zhang Xiao Gang, Wang Guang Yi and Fang Li Jun. They are the representatives of Cynical Realism into Chinese art history, and brought it to the international art world. The “Smile Series” uses a ocular image to represent the phenomena of contemporary culture. The unique art language and fascia have won appraisal all over the world.
''Smile is a trap and I want to hide the negative feelings behind the smile.'' Yue Min Jun
“Smile” is given different interpretations in various culture and regions, the different degrees of smile represent assorted emotions and inner states. The big laugh with winking eyes on Yue Min Jun’s canvas represents the contemporary society within the vastly expanding world that changes along with the artist’s creation and affection.
This ''Untitled'' is created in 2005, and with the taunting political pop arts fading, an emphasis of the human image and affection has taken place. It is a way for artist’s self-examination, and also a way of capture the facial affections of the beings. The boisterous laughter fills the canvas and the naughty gesture liberated as if the viewers are interacting with the images. It is also like an independent mirror that reflects the unrestrained energy released from the painting. The contemporary society has become more open for consumerism, idolism and pop culture. The various laughs are image propaganda and also tools for self reflection. Welcoming or criticizing, appraisal or taunting; all contradictions and tangling can be dealt with and let go by simply a smirk. These laughs are contagious and also encouraging. To Yue Min Jun, “laugh” contents more and variety, it can simply be an expression of emotions, but also a camouflage of the true inner self. It is both a reflection of the modern society but also a positive moving force. Like Yue Min Jun once said “laughing is a guarantee that everything will become better, and it is just like what Buddha have promised of a content next life.
