As one of the members of the new generation of Hantoo, the avant-garde art movement group, Chen Qing-Yao is good at criticizing current social phenomenon by presenting playful “cosplay” images. “Dae Jang-Geum/Jewel in the Palace” presents the irresistible and unconscious complex people possess in the face of the invasion of Japanese and Korean culture. While the public admiring and accepting these cultures, he made further reflections; he extended the phenomenon to it deeper connotation: it's the result of consumption culture and capitalism colonization around the world. The rebelling factor in the work, however, is quite soft. Light judgments are the common characteristic of Taiwanese artists of this generation. Bantering language is the most powerful weapon they use to criticize the society. “Kuso” is only the appearance of Chen's work; serious art language and social issues are weaved into his creation so that viewers can ponder upon the subtle connotations hiding in his fantasy world. In the fictional world of reality presented in his works, those irresponsible, non-logical jokes may be able to provide a sense of satisfaction by making the viewers become unhooked to the reality, but the identification issue that cannot be avoided keeps appearing in the images he creates. As the cultures of Japan and Korea, of China, and of South Pacific countries are all converging in Taiwan, the self-identification of Taiwanese people is still shaping and building its connection with the past as well as the future.
