Among all the early Chinese oil painters, Lin was one of those who perfectly combined Impressionism’s color of the West with the calligraphic factor of the East. He reduced the painting languages to the emotional order of dot and line, pushing the western Pointillism to a new height. Lin’s Pointillism was full of changes, form and texture making a pleasing match. He successfully fit the physical features of oil painting into the form of traditional Chinese Literati Painting, establishing the classic model of the early Chinese Impressionism. From the extant notes of his oil painting classes we can say that he was one of those oil painters who had the most abundant knowledge of color in China during the period from the 1950s to the 1970s. Most of Lin’s paintings were made from the nature, he followed the producing method of Impressionism which was to devote himself to the study of nature with a permanent spirit of exploration. Meanwhile, he also inherited the artistic conceptions of the eastern painting such as simple language and sincere emotion. In his paintings, we can not see any marks of ideology. He finally accomplished the great task to combine Impressionism’s color with the calligraphic factor at the cost of his solitude and being marginalized and provided some classic documents for the history of Chinese oil painting with his own art experience of more than half a century, solitary but solemn.
