Chen Xin Mao apprenticed abstract art and unfolded a succession of trials on abstract ink and calligraphy painting in his school years. After graduation, Chen began creating with mix materials; amalgamating with ink and wash abstractionism, these became the main goal of his ink wash painting discovery. Subtraction is a well-known secret in abstract art, and the most unique characteristic is to make something out of nothing. In Chen’s series, the paintings are reduced to random colors and as if the painting strokes are roaming on the canvas. The series combine real objects with surface, connect ink with collage, mold traditional into modern, and retain the aesthetics value of the Oriental.

“The Historical Records” is the most important series in Chen Xin Fan’s career. For years, he has tried unceasingly to enrich and develop the series, it clearly reflects and fulfills Chen Xin Fan’s thoughts and development. “The Historical Records” is a breakthrough in use of material, and it surpasses the borders of ink wash painting. Bold strikes are taken in different kinds of materials. Other than ink wash and Indian paper, leaf fiber, gypsum powder, rubber and plastic are used to explore the language searching for the perfect inner thoughts moment.  In this series, “Historical Records” is an instrument for affection and thoughts, it usually employs Chinese characters to imply or symbolize, and combining them to achieve a visual effect.
