Exposition:
Flowers, birds, bugs and fish are the typical materials utilized by Chinese literati. The ancient Chinese literates depicted the peaceful and prosperous world with these materials. The materials are used more in forms because they are interesting and attractive, and they also represent seclusion from the world. Yet, Lu Hao’s “The Flower, Bird, Insect & Fish Series - Flower Vase”is extremely humanistic, replacing the fun with fables. On the surface, the fables seem like popular fiction; however, they are construction of strong grounds.
Many say Lu Hao’s’s artworks are the products of political pop, a daintier version. The fact is, the artist’ broke away from the directness and monotone of political pop and instead of criticizing the reality, he took a ridicule and warm approach.
Whether one decides to domesticate or wild life flowers, birds, bugs and fish, once they enter Lu Hao’s’s traditional palace, they no longer have freedom. Freedom is transparent, and can still be seen through a transparent container. The container is chosen to be Beijing’s representative architecture. The past history, reality and future clash against each other, creating a life that is beautiful, challenging and truthful.
