Cao Xiao Dong is an important member of a Surrealism art group “BR” during the 85 New Tide Movement in Nanjing, China. He believes history repeats itself endlessly, and there is a spiritual implication hidden in the process of making to show the traces of human creations.

After the 1990s, Cao Xiao Dong was influenced by minimalist creation of expanding from points into the maximum. 《地形之一》stroke a balance between the western materials and oriental landscape, it showed the traditional elegant and quiet literati painting and an atmosphere that made human and nature in one. Western abstractionism is created by expanding in a minimalist style; other the other hand, Chinese abstractionism is created by the support of thousands of year implicit culture, minimizing from the maximum.
