In the 1980s, new expressionism, new imagism, conceptual art, and installation art permeated Taiwanese art, and realism had been completely abandoned. Nonetheless, Lien chose this method of expression. His realism started with grassroots reality which was infused with his feelings and ideas. And by this he endowed native soil realism with new substance. The scenery he depicted is his birth place–north Taiwan. With the spatio–temporal shifting and changing, north Taiwan has gone from past prosperity to present decline. These changes deeply impressed Lien. He portrayed the deserted swimming pool, the numerous traces inscribed in the transition of time and space seem to tell the indifference shown in the transition of people and ages.
