Cheng Jing Rong once taught at National Taiwan University of Arts, the foggy, cold and mysterious streets around his campus inspired him, along with his liking in mysterious literatures and operas, molded his principles in paintings and established his personal style. His early works are realist and influenced by post impressionism. After returning from his wall-painting education in Japan, his style transcended into surrealism, with cold color tones such as blue and green to set off a tranquil atmosphere.

《Still Life by the Seaside》shows the soothing sounds of ocean waves against the shore, Chen Jing Rong created an amazing conception with the combination of the still object and the ocean. The artist tries to create clean and clear brushstrokes along with a long and deep space that can be seen in the overall dim color tone. The still objects are interpreted with the artist’s subconscious and given new meanings; they are no longer mere objects but something with implications. The painting is far from the rumbles in life, it reflects the inner world and solitude of the artist; through the magic of surrealism, time no longer matters in eternal tranquility.
