Exposition:
The development of Western abstract painting in the 1950 is brought by the subconscious expression in western irrationalism; it is also brought by Japanese Zen meditation aesthetics. Both are presented in the Chinese calligraphy abstract paintings.
In 《抽象二聯作》, Liu Wen Yu proclaims European abstract painting with Chinese calligraphy and his experiences from residing in Brittany, France. He is inspired by real subjective images such as: soil, rock, wood…, making use of the natural figure, traces and symbols. In his paintings, viewers can perceive his Chinese cultural background. The lines are free and even show the strength in Chinese calligraphy, giving the painting a poetic space and graceful atmosphere. Liu Wen Yu applied the detailed French academics traditions to the painting; therefore, even though it is presented in black and in different automatism technique to liberalize the painting. A circular figure is the main object, meticulously achieving completeness with an invisible strength. The curves, line and brushstrokes echo with the artist feelings, again the artist’s inner thoughts are interpreted.
