A graduate from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, Yu Li (Lily Yu) has been active in modern exhibitions lately.  Without any vivid colors or hefty usage, the colors of his artworks are usually: light blue, light gray and dark gray, all synchronized by the theme and affection.  The emaciated human figure surpasses gender and sublimes the theme of love and affliction.  Famous art critic Li Xian Ting said: “Viewing her work is like looking at modern dance, you undergo the evil and beauty, pain and love, live and surreal in life.”

For Yu Li, human affection like the soul, meander and linger in solitary in the realistic world.  Beauty, desolation and evil are unrelated terms which give stark differences in definition for affection and symbol. So different that there is barely a crossing point.  However, the coexistence of amalgamation of things that were different can be witnessed in Yu Li’s artworks.

“The Manjusaka Celestial Flower” is a Buddhist term and the red spider lily is the last blossom in the flower season, which symbolizes the passing of previous life.  In “Heart Sutra Mantra—Manjusaka Celestial Flower”, two gaunt bodies are back to back with each other, not sure if there is love between them.  So light that it is almost weightless. Yu Li intentionally dismisses the sexuality between genders and all associations of thoughts with common customs. Through art creation, symbols with meanings establish a deviating aesthetics in a contradictory relationship.
