Zhang Yu experimented with “fingerprints” which greatly detaches from the existing finger painting tradition. The technique is carried out by pressing on India paper repeatedly with fingers tinted with ink or water. In Zhang Yu’s narration, “fingerprints” create trace images which cannot be easily understood with the “image” principles. The paintings have no association of ‘superficiality”. Judging from the perspective of “image”, “fingerprints” is no doubt an abstract composition and has nothing to do with simplifying, analogizing and idealizing real objects.
The form greatly differs from the freehand brushwork. The technique shows steady round finger prints, all controlled in a very small space. Through pressing repeatedly, Zhang Yu composed a seemingly even more abstract picture. The round color points show relativity, sometimes uncrossing, sometimes uneven, sometimes following strict rules, making the points interact in a very opaque way. Overall, Zhang Yu’s paintings maximize the minimal.
