Li Shuang was one of the 10 founders of Stars Group in the 1970s.  As the only female founder of the group, she was the only artist who was ever imprisoned.  Her tortuous love relationship with a French diplomat opened up a door for inter-racial marriages between Chinese and foreigners.  Li Shuang’s unfortunate personal background and clashing impacts from reality transformed her affection into a desire for freedom and self redemption which were later reflected on a Avalokitesvara like female figure on canvas.  Self inspired, Li Shuang repeatedly expressed herself in different contexts and assimilated techniques from Folk Art.

Under Li Shuang’s strokes were all unique Chinese females with long, single edged eyes and mellow long facial shape.  They are aloof from worldly success, lonely and self-centered. They are not sweet, nor do they conform.  However, there is a sense of bitter pride.
The female figure in 《牡丹朝鳳圖》is pure and innocent who represents Chinese tradition and Daoism.  She is a figure which is detached from the realistic context - a spiritualized or idealized oriental female.  All intricacies, rigidness, insecurity towards reality are excluded for it simply symbolizes peace and perfection.  The figure exists in all sense to cherish the memory of the beauty of Chinese art.
