Strictly from the point of view of technique, Huang Ji is already recognized as a unique stylist, a recognition that grew particularly out of his technical experimentation in the early 1980’s, which early on created a distinctive individual style and a rapidly growing reputation for Huang. After his inward-looking dreamscapes of the 1980’s, Huang began an in-depth exploration of another great theme- interpersonal clashes and the conflicts of changing times, and an examination of changing perceptions of self from childhood through later years. These themes and the continuing challenge of Huang’s experiments in color, composition, and form bought forth a small number of outstanding works employing superb technique and realism, but presenting subjects belonging more to the realm of the supra-real. While some works only appeal more and more to nostalgia as time goes on, Huang’s instead possess a prophetic quality, a strong sense of the futuristic that remains attractive to new viewers. The work presented here, Man in the Wall, is a central work from this period of Huang’s career.
