Cai Guo-Qiang’s artistic creation combines Oriental philosophy and gunpowder material, which strikes the mainstream art of Western tradition. The excursive facture creates a totally unpredictable consequence and it allows the artist to escape from rational mode and limitation of aesthetic technique. In addition, his explosive creation overcomes the conventional artistic format which sensationally inspires viewers. At early stage of his artwork, it mostly explores the relationship between human, heaven, time, and space and primarily focuses on concept of explosion. The spare second of explosion leads Cai Guo-Qiang’s obsession to explore material and energy. His creation encloses the concept of time as well as creating process, transforming object’s existing form. Gunpowder first explodes into energy, and then emits splendid visual effect, at last, leaves trace of black burnt material.
