The “Three Masters Crossing The Sea” are Chang Dai-chien, Pu Hsin-yu, Huang Chun-pi. They are the representatives of the earliest traditional water ink paintings. Among the three, Huang Chun pi was the most influential. For his whole life, Huang Chun Pi began by teaching at Pei Cheng Middle School in Guangzhou and devoted more than 70 years in art education. During the time, Xu Bei Hong taught together for 11 years and developed deep bonding. After moving to Taiwan in 1949, Huang Chun Pi took the position of professor and director at the Art Department of National Taiwan Normal University for more than 20 years. He had plenty students and taught numerous including Yang Ying Feng and Liu Yong; even the first lady Jiang Song Mei Ling learned from him. To celebrate his 70th birthday in 1967, Jiang Song Mei Ling painted and asked Chiang Zhong Cheng to inscribe as a gift. Huang Chun Pi is honored as the “nation’s mentor”.

Huang Chun Pi’s artworks follow the tradition of classical literati. Even extracting from the past, he was still innovative and his artworks were often pleasing. He is especially well known for the waterfalls and the sea of clouds. He once said “I have a liking for landscape and deep forests; but they slightly lack livelihood. The clouds and waterfalls gallops but I can still feel the tranquil. My works gradually use the clouds and waterfalls as the topic.” He travelled around the world and observed different waterfalls, and from repeated practice his skills perfected and his style was full of vitality and magnificence. The artist sees through life through his brushes; and reflected his boundless thoughts through waterfalls paintings.
