Born in 1938 in Shandong, originally named Xia Hongxi, the artist graduated from Yantai Normal School in 1945. In 1949, he moved to Taiwan and founded the Oriental Gallery in 1971, specializing in batik painting. In 1988, he studied painting under Fu Juanfu and, in the same year, won first prize in the "The Era of Ink and Color: Innovation in Ink Painting" competition held by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, earning him the title of "the oldest newcomer in Taiwan's postwar art scene."
Using dry brush and scorched ink techniques, the artist developed a distinctive style through fine brushstrokes and layered textures. His works are held in prestigious collections, including the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and the Princeton University Art Museum in the United States.
