陳道明 CHEN TOMMY ( 1931-2017 )

Chen Tommy, born in 1931 in Shandong, China, during a time of national upheaval, relocated to Taiwan where he put down roots. At the age of 18, he entered the Department of Fine Arts at Taipei Normal University, where he studied alongside contemporary artists such as the "father of contemporary painters" Xiao Qin. He later studied under Li Zhongsheng and, at a young age, displayed a remarkable talent for bold color usage, which was recognized by Xiao Qin. In 1955, he, along with friends such as Xiao Qin, Huo Gang, Wu Hao, Ouyang Wenyuan, Li Yuanjia, Xia Yang, and Xiao Mingxian, founded the Eastern Painting School, later known as one of the "Eight Great Pioneers."

In his early years, Chen was influenced by Cubism, using geometric structures in his paintings. Around 1955, he began using oracle bone script-inspired lines, capturing the flow of consciousness through abstract brushwork. He incorporated mineral powders into his paint, creating textured surfaces with a peeling effect. In his later works, he switched to acrylic and watercolor paints, achieving brighter tones and enhancing the dynamism of his lines. Chen was known for his deep exploration of form and materials, constructing miniature worlds through layers of paint that reflected his bold and innovative spirit in art creation.

Notable exhibitions include the founding of the "Eastern Painting Society" in 1955 with Li Yuanjia, Wu Hao, Xia Yang, Ouyang Wenyuan, Huo Gang, Xiao Qin, Xiao Mingxian, and others. He also exhibited at the 5th São Paulo Art Biennale in 1959, the Paris Youth Biennale, the 1981 20th Anniversary Exhibition of the Eastern Painting Society and May Painting Society, and the 2012 "Art Frontier - Eight Great Pioneers of the East" exhibition.
