赫南.巴斯 HERNAN BAS ( b.1978 )

Hernan Bas, born in 1978 in Miami, USA, showed a natural talent for painting from a young age. At 18, he graduated from an art academy and began to focus on his artistic creations. His paintings often reflect elements of Expressionism and Symbolism, and he has a passion for dramatic expression, drawing inspiration from his extensive reading of literature and analysis of films. His past works frequently blend mythology, Gothic culture, and contemporary popular elements through techniques such as collage and montage, creating a tension between classical and modern styles, while his attention to detail is nearly perfect.

In Bas's works, a recurring figure is a young boy, often modeled after poses from male models in fashion magazines. The spatial compositions in his paintings reveal his interest in interior design and decoration. His depictions of adolescents often humorously address issues from a homosexual perspective, with the dramatic tension and supernatural elements in his works connecting with the "madness" that mainstream society associates with homosexuality. At the time, this was a highly avant-garde and risky artistic approach, recording history through his creations.

In 2010, Bas held his first solo exhibition in China at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. Titled "Choose Your Adventure," part of the West Bund Cultural and Art Season, the exhibition encapsulated two decades of his artistic practice. Bas has participated in several important exhibitions, including the 53rd Venice Biennale and the Whitney Biennial in the USA. His works are part of the permanent collections of many prestigious museums, such as the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
