俞忠穆 YOO CHOONGMOK ( b.1977 )

YOO CHOONGMOK is a renowned Korean glass artist who has exhibited exceptional potential in international exhibitions. In 2003, he was selected by Corning Incorporated as one of the top 100 emerging glass artists worldwide. That same year, he received a scholarship from the Pilchuck Glass School, founded by Dale Chihuly, and became a member of the school's seminar group. He was employed as the chief glass designer at Carlson Glass Works in New York, USA, where he worked for nine years. Since then, he has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Korea, the United States, and the United Kingdom. His works are collected by various institutions, including Gana Art Center, Yuhan Pharmaceutical, Park Young Gallery in Korea, Prague Gallery in the Czech Republic, and Global Artway Gallery in the United States.

During his decade-long experience living in the US and the UK, he reflected on the history of Korean art amidst the changing societies, transforming these reflections into creative motivations expressed through visual language. Yoo Choongmok uses the glass material, most akin to water droplets, on coarse yellow fabric, interpreting the dual properties of glass—transparency, solidity, and fragility—in a unique way. The glass droplets in his work maintain their crystalline transparency but change shape and shadow with varying light, creating a captivating effect. For him, the canvas symbolizes the past, while the colors and glass express his emotions and feelings in the present and future. His works abstractly showcase the harmony of lines and surfaces, three-dimensionality, and the fundamental vertical and horizontal compositions, based on the Korean traditional colors and the five cardinal colors, in a way that reflects his artistic vision.
