Moïse Kisling, born into a Jewish family in Krakow, Poland, encountered his mentor, Jozef Pankiewicz, while studying at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts. Pankiewicz, who had been influenced by Impressionism during his time in Paris, believed that Paris was the epicenter of art. Consequently, he encouraged Kisling to pursue his artistic aspirations in the French capital. In the early 20th century, Paris was a thriving hub of various modern art movements, including Fauvism, Cubism, and more.
In 1910, filled with dreams and aspirations, Moïse Kisling arrived in Paris and settled in the Montmartre and Montparnasse districts. During this period, roughly from 1910 to 1920, Montparnasse became the epicenter of artistic activity in Paris. A group of artists from diverse cultural backgrounds and languages, who had left their homelands in pursuit of art, congregated in Paris. They shared lodgings in the garrets and cottages of Montparnasse on the left bank of the Seine, fostering a flexible, diverse, and creative haven. Their eclectic styles defied classification and were collectively referred to as the "Paris School" based on their active regions.
Moïse Kisling was initially influenced by artists like Paul Cézanne, André Derain, and the Cubists. He placed a stronger emphasis on the structural composition of his images, often portraying figures, landscapes, and still life in simplified forms and subdued color palettes. After 1915, he transitioned towards Expressionism. By the early 1920s, his painting style reached maturity, combining precise drawing techniques with vivid colors. His works often featured clear and straightforward depictions, emphasizing fluid and vibrant forms. His subjects were typically friends, wives, actresses, models, young boys, and girls. Kisling's unique painting style combined the lively colors of his homeland's tradition with the solid techniques of the academic style, creating a distinctive and enchanting artistic style.
