Byun Sehee was born in 1990 on Jeju Island, South Korea. In 2017, she earned a master's degree in fine arts from Jeju University. Her inspiration for her artwork is drawn from childhood memories and daily life. She has a keen eye for capturing tiny details and fragments, deconstructing and reassembling them into a visual style reminiscent of a fairy tale book. Through her art, she constructs a thought-provoking space of consciousness.
In her childhood memories, Byun Sehee's parents were often too busy with work to spend time with her. She anthropomorphized the stuffed animals at home, treating them as her closest friends. Each teddy bear and plush toy had a name and a distinct personality, accompanying her throughout her formative years. Through her artwork, the artist not only conveys an honest reflection of her inner world but also emphasizes the potential for art to help maintain a balance in the spiritual realm, learning to treat one's own existence with kindness.
Although her paintings resemble stills from a picture book, she hopes viewers can sense the ongoing development of stories and the unfinished state of emotions, thoughts, and memories. Her works represent real records of her inner world, and as life progresses, old and new memories will continue to intersect with daily life, creating different perspectives for her next piece.
Byun Sehee has exhibited her artwork at various art institutions and galleries, including the Gidang Museum, Jeju Art Museum, and the Hongik University Museum of Contemporary Art. She has also been invited to participate in numerous international art exhibitions, including those in Dubai, Japan, and China.
