小島久典 HISANORI KOJIMA ( b.1986 )

Ryoichi Yamazaki, born in 1986 in Hiroshima City, graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2010. In 2015, he earned his Ph.D. in Cultural Property Conservation from the same university. Currently, he serves as a lecturer at the university while actively engaging in creative works, exhibitions, and lectures.

Ryoichi Yamazaki developed a strong interest in three-dimensional artwork since the first grade of elementary school. During high school, due to the absence of a specialized sculpture teacher, he collaborated with like-minded classmates to study and create models and sculptures. Upon entering university, he specialized in woodcarving and, during his graduate studies, delved into the world of classical carving. This led him to engage in tasks such as the restoration of Buddhist statues, research, and the revival of lost cultural heritage. Cultural heritage restoration demands a comprehensive understanding of woodcarving, coloring techniques, materials science, as well as knowledge related to Japanese history and art history.

Ryoichi Yamazaki's rigorous training in restoration techniques has equipped him to not only have an in-depth grasp of the forms of ancient Buddhist statues but also to thoroughly research the carving techniques and speed that were prevalent during the respective historical periods, achieving the highest level of restoration. In his butterfly creations, he seamlessly incorporates these exceptional woodcarving techniques, reflecting his aspiration for the interplay between the virtual and the real in history, mirroring the coexistence of contemporary reality and the past.
