山口歷 MEGURU YAMAGUCHI (b.1984)

Yamaguchi Meguru was born in Tokyo Shibuya in 1984. Influenced by his parents who were both fashion designers, he developed a strong interest in art from a young age. In 2007, he moved to Brooklyn, New York to pursue his art career and has been creating art ever since. His early works were inspired by social media images, and were referred to as "digital impressionism." In recent years, he has been influenced by graffiti culture and pop art from Europe and the United States, as well as traditional Japanese aesthetics such as ukiyo-e, garden art, and calligraphy, expanding his own artistic possibilities, along with the birth of "sculpture painting."

Embracing the randomness of splattering pigments and the freedom of gestural movement, he seeks to go beyond the existing framework of basic painting elements, break away from the physical limitations of brush strokes, and achieve forms that are free and expressive, showcasing a rich imagination of abstract visuals. His most well-known "Beyond the Bounds" series is the best example of this. His works have been exhibited at the ACE HOTEL, KINFOLK 94, +81 GALLERY in New York, and the Hidari Jingaro Museum in Tokyo. He has also collaborated with various fashion brands, such as a joint collection with Issey Miyake and Nike in 2017, and a collaboration with UNIQLO in 2018.
