ZHONG CHENG

黎志文 LAI CHIMAN (b.1949)

Lai Chiman was born in Hong Kong in 1949. After graduating from the Sculpture Department of the National Taiwan College of Arts in 1973, he went to the famous world sculpture center, Carrara in Italy, and worked at the Henraux stone carving studio with internationally renowned artists such as Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, and Pietro Cascella. In 1977, he received a research grant from American sculptor Robert Ruskin and went to the United States, where he obtained a Master's degree in sculpture from the University of Wyoming in 1980. In 1982, he obtained the status of a professional artist from a Dutch visual arts organization and returned to Taiwan to teach at the National Academy of Arts until his retirement in 2016.

 

Lai Chiman 's love for the Taoist philosophy and its unique interests inspired him to begin using the principles of Chinese Six Scripts to create sculptures during his time in Italy. He drew inspiration from Eastern imagery and transformed it into a modern sculptural language, creating his unique artistic vocabulary.

 

Based in Taiwan, Lai Chiman's sculpture works have been widely recognized by the international art community. His works have been collected by institutions such as the Dutch National BKR Visual Arts Organization, the University of Wyoming Art Museum, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the Genichiro Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art in Japan, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong government, the Seoul Metropolitan Government in South Korea, and the Shanghai Sculpture Park in China. He is a prominent figure in the Chinese sculpture world.
