郭雪湖 KUO HSUEH-HU (1908-2012)

Kuo Hsueh-Hu, born in 1908 in Taipei, was a painter during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. He was one of the most representative and influential painters in modern Taiwan and a pioneer of Taiwanese gouache painting. At the age of 16, he became an apprentice at "Xue Xi Art Studio" opened by Cai Xuexi, who gave him the new name "Guo Xue-Hu". This was the turning point in Guo Xue-Hu's life. He was also one of the main initiators and founders of the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition, which was organized after the war.

His works broke away from the traditional pattern of imitating ancient styles and had a clear and fresh style. He portrayed the local culture and scenery of Taiwan's subtropical areas truthfully in his artistic creations, showing the unique painting style of Taiwan. In 1964, Guo Xue-Hu went to Japan for research and also developed his personal creations. He also went to Thailand, the Philippines, India, mainland China, and the United States to complete many major works and participated in overseas exhibitions many times.

In 1978, Guo Xue-Hu and his wife Lin Aqin settled in Richmond District, San Francisco, California, USA, and continued to create art. On January 23, 2012, Guo Xue-Hu passed away at the age of 103 in his home in San Francisco.
